When customers call with questions about uneven slices we often start with assessing the cake dial finger adjustment. If the dial fingers are out place the cake won’t be centered during the cutting process, resulting in uneven portions. Luckily, it is easy to recenter a dial by measuring and adjusting the dial fingers.

HOW TO ADJUST YOUR DIAL FINGERS

For this process you will need a tape measure or ruler, as well as a set of hex keys or Allen wrenches. Inspect the dial visually to see if any of the dial fingers are pushed all the way in or visually out of alignment. In order to find the distance from the cake dial to set the dial fingers take a cake round base and place it on the dial, hold it centered, and measure how far out a dial finger needs to be to keep the cake base centered.

Once you know how far out each dial finger should be placed, use the hex key that matches that distance and place it between the dial finger base and the dial base. Using the 1/8th inch Allen wrench, tighten the set screw to hold the dial finger in place. Continue around the dial and measure all finger spacing, even on fingers that look to be inline.
